The heart and soul of the Karoo is centred around its towns. While the main economic activity of the Karoo is farming and as the
average farms are large (5,000+ ha), the towns, the commercial centres, are far apart. Most Karoo towns were founded to meet the religious needs of growing farming communities in the middle to late 1800's. As a result, the village focal point is a steepled Dutch Reformed church in 'Kerkstraat' (Church Street). Activities in the towns are mainly driven by requirements of the local farming communities. Weather in the Karoo is largely predictable. Hot and dry in summer and cold in winter. Average day temperatures (over 12 months) is near 30deg. Nights are cool to very cold in winter when snow is not uncommon. On some of the Karoo towns listed we already give you a little background and also indicate what you can see, do and experience in and around them. Photographs will also be added/changed in time. At this time our definition of a town is a community with a post office and unique postal code. This may change in time as will the information that will be updated and expanded upon.
