HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 30 44S 25 06E) From Cape Town, follow the N1 northward. Colesberg is about halfway between Cape Town and Pretoria. HISTORY The area was first inhabited by San Bushmen. Later trekboere arrived and they in turn were followed in 1814 by missionaries. The farmers feared for their safety with about 1700 bushman gathered at 2 mission stations and appealed to the Cape Government to guarantee their safety. By 1818 the mission work was stopped by Government decree. The Cape Government granted land to the Dutch Reformed church in 1830 and so a town was born.
