HOW TO GET THERE
(GPS: 30 09S 24 01E)
From Beaufort West, travel north on the N1. Just outside Hanover is a clearly signposted turn-of onto the N10 towards De Aar.

HISTORY
One Jan Gabriel Vermeulen was granted a farm in 1839. A town developed that was formally laid out in 1902.

De Aar became a municipality in 1904. By 1914 a railway line to Namibia was laid.

De Aar at one time had the second largest railway junction as well as the second largest postal centre in South Africa.

ORIGINS OF THE NAME
A vein or subteranean watercourse (Dutch = aar) prompted the owner of the farm to name it De Aar. The town was named after the farm.
