HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 31 55S 21 31E) From Cape Town, follow the N1 to Beaufort West. At Leeu Gamka, turn onto the R353 towards Fraserburg. HISTORY Farmers that settled in the district established a town in 1852 on the farm Rietfontein. Fraserburg is known for only a few reasons. One is sheep farming. Another is the unique 'pepperbus', a six-sided building with an interesting history. Yet another, and maybe most important, is the Gansfontein palaeo-surface, discovered in 1968, one of the most clear ever discovered in the Karoo, providing the most complete evolutionary record in the world of the change from reptile to mammal. ORIGINS OF THE NAME Fraserburg was named after two people. The Scottish Reverend Colin Fraser (father of Free State President MT Steyn's wife) and a local elder, Gerrit Jacobus Meyburgh.
