HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 33 29S 21 16E) From Cape Town, follow the N1 north. At Worcester turn towards Robertson and continue on Route62 to Ladismith. HISTORY Ladismith was established by the Dutch Reformed Church in 1851 on a portion of the farm Ylands Valley, in the shadow of 'Towerkop' a prominent peak (2189m) in the Klien Swartberg mountains. The town was surveyed and laid out in 1852. It was finally declared a town 10years later. In 1903 Ladismith became a municipality. Today it is still a small karoo town, known for spectacular scenery, cheese and fruit production. ORIGINS OF THE NAME Named after Lady Juana Maria de los Dolores de Leon Smith, Spanish wife of Sir Harry Smith(1787 - 1875) the Governor of the Cape from 1847 to 1852. The original "Lady Smith" was changed to Ladismith in 1879.
