Can be reached off the N1 with turn-offs at Hanover and Colesberg. HISTORY Middelburg was founded out of the need for a church. It was laid out on the farm Driefontein in 1852 and became a municipality in 1913. Locals will tell you it is the middle of the most beautiful part of the Great Karoo. The town is situated on very rich underwater reserves which does make it a green oasis on your journey through the Karoo.
