HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 31 25S 23 56E) Situated next to the N1, halfway between the major karoo towns of Beaufort West and Colesberg. HISTORY A new church in 1843 sparked development of the town on the farm Driefontein. It became a municipality in 1844. Placed in the heart of the Great Karoo Desert, which the locals like to describe as the World’s best developed desert, Richmond is ideally situated as the perfect point of departure to explore the wonders of the Karoo. Action during the Boer War included two attacks on the town. The area surrounding Richmond is blessed with miles and miles of remote and stunningly beautiful mountains. The grazing is very good and the area is well known for its sheep farming. A popular destination with hunters. The climate of Richmond makes it a superb place to live. ORIGINS OF THE NAME Named after the 5th Duke of Richmond (1791-1860), father-in-law of Sir Peregrine Maitland, governor of the Cape from 1844 to 1847.
