HOW TO GET THERE (GPS: 32 45S 20 40E) From Cape Town, follow the N1 northward for about 230km. At Matjiesfontein turn towards Sutherland on the R354. HISTORY The first farmers settled in the area from around 1750. A town was established in 1855 on the farm De List, when the first church was built. By 1872 there were 19 houses. Became a municipality in 1884. Today Sutherland is perhaps best known for its low temperatures and the nearby Astronomical Observatory.
