HISTORY
Victoria West was established as a church centre in 1843 on the farm Zeekoegat. The first stands were sold in 1850. By 1856 the first bank was established and in 1876 the first copy of the still published Victoria West Messenger was printed. During the diamond rush in the 1880s Victoria West was used as a staging post.

Today it is one of the pretiest Karoo towns, its economy largely dependant on sheep farming.

ORIGINS OF THE NAME
First named Victoria in 1844 in honour of Victoria(1819-1901) the Queen of England from 1837 to 1901. In 1855 the name was changed to Victoria West to avoid confusion with Victoria East.
