    HOW TO GET THERE
From Cape Town, follow the N1 northward for about 230km. At Matjiesfontein, turn towards Sutherland. The Observatory is located about 12km outside Sutherland on the road to Fraserburg.

    DETAIL
Since the 1970's, a hilltop near Sutherland is home to this impressive observatory. At an altitude of 1760m (some 200m above the town), it takes advantage of the clear, unpoluted Karoo air for the use of a number of optical and infra-red telescopes to scan the southern skies.

It is also now the home of SALT (South African Large Telescope), which, at 11m, is the largest telescope in the southern hemisfere.
